El Haitiano: What is Cuban Voodoo?

Hailing from the eastern part of the island of Cuba in the Caribbean is in closest proximity to the island of Ayiti known as Dominican Republic and Haiti. Oriente, Cuba was where the tradition of Briyumba (a branch of Palo Mayombe known for the use of a kiumba or skull) was known for where its fiercest revolutionary cauldron bearing necromantic Congolese based "witches" lived.

But also these Haitians moved there, who call their priests Mambo and Houngan with their Vodou. The magic of the Congo similarily runs through Vodou beside its West African Pantheon and preservation of mixed tribes. (See previous blog entry about lineages of Voodoo as the Dahomey Arara were also represented through Orisha Cuban Lucumi traditions). Like most people they did not call it Voodoo, they called it El Haitiano, The Haitian way.

If a person was in Kimbisa ( another branch of Palo ) near the capitol city of Havana instead, one could initiate a person into this seperately. The Haitians likewise have Haitian Palo now but instead of cauldrons use prepared skulls in the sense of cultural exchanges. Still Vodou being done as mainly a family tradition in this manner only initiating others only within Cuba or coming from Haiti, doing its own variant notably after the Haitian revolution and subsequent waves of migration.

As there has been questions and interest here is what can be said, they were of Haitian origin that mixed into the local population in Cuba. This area was the absolute poorest and looked down as unsavory by the pinnacle of Ifa groups there etc so they did not mix further or saw it as something to study and was a cultural clash otherwise.

The Cubans who practiced Vodou had the same 3 drum set as the Asson Asogwe "Haitian Vudu" lineage which they would make of wood and animal skin, but instead only used a Maraca or Tcha because of access to the gourd and still sing in Creole. So it became its own branch in several ways.

They could make a head pot to represent ones main spirit Lwa or with other spirit representations within.

They could also make "cuvee Lwa" which is a container for a single Lwa, several if desired commonly in a smallish metal cauldron however access to materials was an issue.  Fegai could be represented with St Jacques aka Ogou Balendjo ( St Jacques) used instead a wooden mortars secrets or with a different object placed nearby.

They had not alot of saint statues but a painted representation on a wall perhaps often St Michael, St Jacques and Metresili. Instead of a figure for Erzulie Freda they would maybe even use a Caridad de Cobre or Virgin de Regla borrowed from Ochun/Yemaya/Catholic supply.

They generally hid things under a picture frame ontop, pots under a table with a sheet, however regions in the East of Cuba were also very dangerous rugged mountain areas and remote, so were not as accessible being maroon society. There were not even many churches outside of other cities. City of La Tunas, San Santiago ( a name/form of Ogun Balendjo) and Guantanamo are noted.

As Cuba turned to Communism, religion, even Catholicism was met with suspicion and so not even rosary were worn about, but some mentions of Santeria was tolerated for political gain and folk cultural identity.

This is what I learned from my mentor who is a Houngan and Kimbisero, but also what I saw in one practitioner coming from Briyumba.

I hope you enjoyed this article,

11 World Lineages of Voodoo, West African Practices

The are the current known World Voodoo Lineages Many traditions of "Voodoo" do not call themselves that, here are the names and origin places of ongoing West African practices. I have put the music instrument to denote some lineage.

1  Asogwe  Asson lineage "Haitian Vodou" Haiti, especially near the capitol Port au Prince

They will call their tradition Ginen or Sevis Lwa,Serving the Lwa: Mambo/Manbo or Houngan Priest/Oungan

2 21 Divisions: Dominican Republic, preserve nations of spirits as tribes in the new world from Africa

Use of Saints may feature more prominently, Mama Mambo and Papa Lwa

3 Tegare Tigare / Nana Priest, some djinn magic merged with Islam, masculine Nana priest

Akan have Komfo Priests, Tron: Wami Wata, may have Hindu Syncretism,

Ewe, Mina, Fon: In West Africa Togo Ghana Benin Nigeria,

Vodoun, Use Shekere

4  Sanse: Puerto Rico, Sancista, with Espiritismo Spiritualist Seance Tradition Tcha Tcha/Kwa

5 New Orleans Voodoo, Louisiana Voodoo, USA,

Vodouisants/devotee and family practice/

Expats from other Vodou etc African practices settled mostly here and on the eastern seaboard from NY to Florida then to a lesser extent SE and South

6 Gullah Geechee people : Florida, South Carolina, Georgia: USA

7 Family /Lakou yard Baptismal style Tcha, Haiti especially in the North, Dominican Republic. Root traditions such as Souvenance, and other formative pre revolution groups.

8 Haitiano "Cuban Vudu" via Oriente East Cuba and Havana Kimbisa/ Maraca/Tcha due to the absence of gourd but with same 3 drum set as Haitians

9 Offshoot maroon society such as SanPwel, Bizango, Makaya/practices, Zobop etc: Haiti

10 Winti : West African origin: Suriname South America

11 There was preserved a line of Dahomey Voudoun "Orisha"into Yoruba based Santeria such as the family of Babaluaye, Nana Buruku, and Nanu are usually given together and Orisha names also given instead of Ellegua is given also Afra/ Eshu Afra, Afrakete instead of Yemaya etc

The Awan basket cleansing ceremony done at Olokun and Babaluaye reception are done. Cuba via Ifa /Santeria/Ocha priests are Santera/Santero or for Ifa masculine Babalwo

Honorable Mention:  Quimbanda where I believe it is the spirit Exu Marabo is said to have retained West African Islamic Male line under Ochosi (seen as mixed-native heritage sort of like Nsasi/Siete Rayos in Cuban Palo) which is why under mixed people in the new world he rules some appearance of tribe division from the kingdom of Lyre and associated crossroads. While Umbanda/Candomble and associated Quimbanda have spirits under Yoruba and mainly spiritualist/Congo influenced. There were conversion in Africa of Muslim and Congolese Christians before Transatlantic slavery to Brazil

The Magician and the Rabbit in the Hat: Ancestral Spring Vodou Medicine & Occult Symbolism

The magician, storyteller, musical conductor or master of ceremonies often wears a tophat, a hat which is worn on the head is the spirit consciousness, as the Vodou song to La Sirene mermaid is about the hat falling into the sea. The hat is the power of magicians thought and air/space and magick. Specifically a black hole, a center of darkness, out of black matter comes a spark, the stars, illumination, a point of intersected light as individual or pwen. Legba, may it be Kalfou or Lucero the magician is called for this reason, the cigar is sparked by the match, because without "him" the messenger, "angels" we cannot do magi. The embers of fire requiring air and voice or sound of the priest or operator to propulse energy besides lofty thought.

Out of the hat or portal comes magic, tricks. Laying tricks as they say in Hoodoo. Out comes the rabbit or sometimes strips of usually red cloth such as a banner or bandana (active hot/blood/Mars, male Ogou sorcery science) or a dove (of Venus/sacrifice/spirit evocation). These are the dressings/perfume and materials for the stage science to involve the subconscious. But also represent material ancient spiritual acts. Seen below mimics with the fool card rucksack or Felix the cat's magic bag of tricks that is corresponded with the creator and the invisible void of 0.

The rabbit is seen as a Hoodoo trickster of African American folk tradition. They also hold the childhood story of Briar or Brer Rabbit from African origin of the Hare. However trickster animals may be coyote/wild dog, spider Anansi or even raven depending on culture they share connection with creator process. Briar rabbit played possum/dead or injured/helpless or unassuming and was flung into safety of a thorny briar (western ceremonial rose bush/secret society scorpionic subrosa/ hedge witch).

Thus rabbit paws were carried for luck and to evade much larger predators/ oppressors for protection. In the story the fox made a doll trap on the road that the rabbit was able to evade with intelligence " I was born and bred in the briar patch" he taunted after. "You cant out trick a trickster, he knows all the tricks!" My dad would say as I snuck late back into the house as a teen. Also " you want to dance all night you have to pay the fiddler in the morning". Another adage.

Rabbit medicine is procreative as seen with the multiplication of bunnies at the Spring and Easter, as a generative and regenerative ancestral land force, flowers open and the potential or possibilities of the universe and sight/light, eggs are symbolised for fertility/possibility, animals are born for food and survival Thus rabbits are a symbol of abundance and prosperity also associated with the first of the month "rabbit rabbit rabbit" or "white rabbit" is chanted to usher in good energy, also sometimes used at a full or hare moon in modern time.

We can see the white rabbit in the story Alice in wonderland as a sort of quest guide to follow to regain a sense of reality or self discovery on adventure of life. Jefferson Airplane's song White rabbit is about LSD or visions and alternate state and discovery of consciousness. Shamanically rabbits were an animal witches were said to shapeshift into, thus are connected to ancestors and necromancy. And in European shamanic tradition, the druid or hero was able to outsmart their foe by using the powers of the animals through their flexible intelligence to transform and outsmart an enemy in tales such as Taliesin.

The Springtime was an ancestral time, we only sync our calenders to the irish/catholic universalism of November, as many other cultures held this time in the spring it was said the grass blade were the snake tails poking out (The Golden bough by Fraser), and Gran Bwa is such as the evergreen Christmas tree. Thus links the land and ancestors, ghede to Ogun fet dates as St George (Good of the Green) springs opener follows as well as Azaka the agriculture connections into May.

Thus Brighid feast date is in February of the returning light and greenery of the land and is also observed passed torch over the hedge by the winter crone. Wells in the earth led to the ancestors, fairy mounds were ancestral burial sites, along with the staff and cauldron of the Dagdha. Thus we also celebrate the Ghede in Feb-April which also coincides with Mardigras and Ash Wednesday etc and retains irish and catholic syncretism in Caribbean history, victorianism, funeral rites and spirituality.
